Aubameyang put the dismissal of the league leader in the classic meeting in motion by nodding in 1-0 in the 29th minute.

By then, the forward, who came from Arsenal in early February, had been in windy weather at the beginning of the match, but managed without even a yellow card after an ugly stamping.

Just nine minutes after the lead goal, Ronald Araujo nodded in 2-0 and again came the play from Ousmane Dembele.

The second half barely had time to start so Ferran Torres angled in 3-0 in the 47th minute and four minutes later Aubameyang made his second. A goal that was first waved off for offside, but which after VAR review was approved.

Then some of the home supporters also started leaving the arena.

A debt-laden Barcelona was in crisis last summer when Lionel Messi was forced to leave the club due to poor finances. But since former star Xavi Hernandez came in as the new coach in November, things have slowly but surely changed – at least sportingly.

The league title has long been run, Real Madrid leads by far, but the big win strengthened Barcelona’s fourth place – the last place for Champions League games next season.

Barcelona is four points ahead of five Betis and has one match less played.

Real Madrid, who lacked attacking star Karim Benzema, lead La Liga by nine points ahead of Sevilla, are ready for the Champions League quarter-finals but the blow to the worst rival in El Clasico was a real knock for coach Carlo Ancelotti and his club.
