Saga not over yet: Beerschot does not accept the BAS ruling and still asks for a flat defeat for Standard

Beerschot does not accept the decision of the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport (BAS) to make up for the unplayed competition match between Standard and Beerschot. The Antwerp club, which “if necessary” wants to restart the disciplinary procedure, has reported this on Friday.

The match of the nineteenth match day in 1A, which was scheduled for December 15, could not take place because police strikes could not guarantee the safety of the Liège stadium. A new date would be sought, but Beerschot opposed this and demanded a forfait defeat on the basis of the federation regulations. However, the Disciplinary Committee of Professional Football decided that the match had to be played after all, after which Beerschot went to the BAS. That’s where the Rats were again. The Pro League confirmed yesterday/Thursday that the game will be made up on Wednesday, March 2 (6:45 PM).

But Beerschot, who can use every point in the relegation battle, doesn’t stop there. “Beerschot received the ruling from the BAS in the Standard case last night,” the closing party explains in a statement. “They also declared the complaint against Standard inadmissible, as the case was brought by the calendar manager of the Pro League and not by Beerschot himself. Beerschot wishes to emphasize that it was the calendar manager who brought the matter before the court, because Standard did not agree with the requested lump sum. Beerschot voluntarily intervened in the procedure, which now shows that this procedure was not allowed to be started by the calendar manager.”

In these circumstances, Beerschot assumes that Standard will receive a forfait defeat, “since the association regulations are very clear on that point”, it continues. Beerschot is now awaiting the position of the calendar manager regarding a forfeit. The club announces that it will initiate the procedure again if necessary.

Beerschot is eighteenth and last in the first division with sixteen points from 27 games. Seraing, who is the seventeenth provisional barragist, has 23 points (28 matches). Zulte Waregem in safe sixteenth place has 26 points (28 games).

Club Statement: Beerschot legt zich niet neer bij de beslissing van het BAS in de zaak Standard.
