Marc Overmars still has to repay Ajax 1.25 million euros after departure due to cross-border behavior

The departed director of football affairs Marc Overmars has to pay back 1.25 million euros in signing money to Ajax. The club makes this known in the report on the half-year figures of the leader of the Eredivisie.

Overmars decided to leave Ajax on February 6, after reports of cross-border behavior towards female employees of the Amsterdam club. He was reappointed on 28 January during a special general meeting for shareholders until mid-2026. Overmars received 1.25 million euros in signing money.

The supervisory board of Ajax emphasizes that Overmars has ultimately decided to resign. According to the supervisory board, there is no redundancy scheme and the fully prepaid signing fee of 1.25 million euros must be repaid.

Safer sports and work climate

“The cross-border behavior is drastic for the women who have had to deal with this,” it continues at the Amsterdam top club. “Good aftercare is of great importance and this has been initiated. Ajax will take steps towards a safer sports and work climate and will be assisted in this by an external specialized agency. This agency has launched an investigation and comes up with recommendations that are followed up with the help of expert third parties.”
