Brazil: Corinthians, by Vítor Pereira, draw and may lose ‘ground’ to the leader
Corinthians, coached by the Portuguese Vítor Pereira, conceded a 0-0 draw against Santos on Saturday, in a game of the 14th round, and could lose ‘ground’ to the leader of the Brazilian football championship, Palmeiras.
On the eve of welcoming the Argentines from Boca Juniors, in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Libertadores Cup, the ‘Timão’ was unable to capitalize on the greater possession of the ball against their rivals from São Paulo, in a meeting in which they had the Portuguese side Rafael Ramos from start.
With just three wins in the last nine games in the ‘Brasileirão’, the team led by Vítor Pereira remains in second place, with 26 points, two behind the leader Palmeiras (28).
However, Corinthians can see the team led by Abel Ferreira increase their advantage at the top of the classification, if the ‘verdão’ beat Avaí today, in Florianópolis.
Flamengo returned to triumphs in the competition, against América Mineiro, by 3-0, and provisionally rose to seventh place, with 18 points. Gabriel Barbosa, De Arrascaeta and Marinho signed the goals of the carioca team, which, since the departure of Paulo Sousa, has won two and lost two.
Even today, Luís Castro’s Botafogo hosts Fluminense, while the ‘distressed’ Cuiabá, coached by António Oliveira, visits Goiás.
