Swedish international player Zlatan Ibrahimovic underwent surgery on his left knee and will be out of action for between seven and eight months, which could precipitate the end of the striker’s career, AC Milan announced today.

“Surgical intervention had been planned for some time to definitively resolve the instability of the joint, thanks to the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament”, informed the Italian champion, adding that “this objective has been achieved”.

AC Milan indicated that “the estimated absence will be between seven and eight months”, which sends the 40-year-old veteran player’s return to competition to the beginning of 2023, if he intends to continue his football career.

Ibrahimovic said on Sunday that the extension of his career is dependent on his physical abilities, after AC Milan’s 3-0 victory over Sassuolo, which won the Italian title for the club of Portuguese international forward Rafael Leão.

“I suffered a lot to win this trophy. First of all, I have to do whatever it takes to be okay and that [end of career] will depend on what happens in the next few days”, said the Swedish striker, who joined AC Milan in January 2020.
